Computer Mouse and Keyboard Tips

Four Reasons to buy an Optical Mouse

Are you still using an old ball mouse to navigate your way through Windows Explorer or the Internet? Ball mice are old-fashioned and outdated! Keep in style and buy yourself an optical mouse. Everyone already has one these days.
If you do not happen to have one already, here are some great reasons to buy an optical mouse.
* Low Maintenance
An optical computer mouse no longer relies on balls to detect a cursor’s location on the computer monitor. The optical mouse emits a light emitting diode (LED) — usually colored red — that detects the device’ movements. When in movement, the optical mouse takes thousands of pictures of the flat surface on which it is placed. By measuring and comparing the small and minute distances the mouse travels when you move it about a flat surface, the optical mouse is able to tell how far to move your onscreen cursor.
Since it no longer uses a ball, the optical mouse is easier to maintain. You no longer need to clean up any balls when they get dirty. In addition, you can enjoy the benefits of smoother and continuous cursor movements. When the balls of mechanical mice get clogged with dirt and dust — and this happens often — cursor movement becomes irritatingly choppy.

* No More Mouse Pads
Optical mice can be used on any flat surface such as the top of your computer desk, a book or a bench. As such, they obviate the need for mouse pads. Ball mice, on the other hand, rely on mouse pads to detect and translate movement.
Make sure, however, that you place your optical mouse on an opaque surface. If you place it on top of a transparent surface, some of the LED will seep through the transparent surface. Consequently, your optical mouse will not be able to accurately record and process movements.

* Lightweight
Optical mice are lighter than ball mice. This makes them easier to maneuver. For those who work long hours in front of their computers, you will appreciate the lightweight build of an optical mouse. With an optical mouse, you will encounter less friction and resistance when moving your mouse about, and minimize hand and wrist strains.

* Eye-catching
One attribute that makes optical mice so appealing is their eye-catching colors and designs. The LED lights of optical mice alone are a treat. Usually sporting red LEDs, more modern optical mice can have green and blue LEDs. Others optical mice have transparent casings so their glow is evident in dimly lit areas. Some optical mice even cycle through many colors.
For appeal alone, an optical mouse is a great addition to your computer accessories!
